How to use a pollen press? A helpful guide to use it right

A pollen press is an easy-to-use device that compresses flowers or trichomes to make perfect pucks or resins. SharpStone Grinder gets the maximum demands for its pollen press to ensure simple, long-term storage of herb’s potent compounds.

The extraction of resin from pollen of cannabis is an age-old practice and it is what pollen presses are supposed to do. A pollen press is a handy machine that allows extraction of resin from flowers or trichomes of cannabis plant. In the world of resin extraction, these machines are popular for offering versatility and flexibility.

There are different types of pollen presses, catering to varied user requirements. Let’s explore.

What is a cannabis pollen press?

This is a simple tool used to turn cannabis flowers or trichomes into coins or pellets. Same type of pollen press can also be used for processing other plant materials to extract active compounds for use in cosmetic and herbal industries. A pollen press allows extraction of active compounds or potent concentrates, like cannabis oil, which hold special therapeutic significance.

A pollen press can convert the potent kief or powder obtained after grinding into solid coins or discs which is a more compact form.

What are trichomes and kief here?

A fresh cannabis bud has a white, sticky layer, known as trichomes. These are not just for aesthetics, but carry immense significance as they are the potent compounds containing high volume of cannabinoids, or active compounds of cannabis.

How to use trichomes and kief to their full potential?

Using kief or trichomes to their full potential is possible through pollen press.

Grinding buds can lead to wastage of a lot of those sticky kief, but not when processed with grinders. Using a kief catcher, users can collect the potent kief, typically in the last compartment of the grinder. This collected kief can be pressed into coins or pellets using a pollen press.

How many types of pollen presses are there?

Pollen presses can be categorized as manual or automatic, depending on the pressing mechanism they are built in with. While manual pressing requires pressing by hands, automatic ones leverage hydraulic technology to make pressing effortless.

How to use a pollen press: Right way of using is essential

This is a multi-step process to ensure effective pressing of kief. To begin with, users must be ready with the kief or trichomes. Here are the steps:

·         Collecting the trichomes

First of all, collect the trichomes. But, how to collect the trichomes? If using a grinder, simply grind the buds as typically it is done. Using a kief collection, it becomes easier to collect the trichomes from the grinder. Transfer it to the clean surface, and keep collecting.

·         Pressing the trichomes

Pressing is easier when the collected kief has dried. Most presses are similar in design with basic structure including a cylinder with a screw mechanism, and a removal cap at the end. To press, put a little amount of trichomes into the cylinder, and apply pressure gently to push them down. Close the cap and press. It is essential to keep the pollen material into the press for at leas 6-8 hours.

It is recommended not to overfill the cylinder of a pollen press. Use even pressure. If the material is not pressing, it is suggested to break the lumps in the material and spread them evenly in the press.

Practice is essential to get it done right everytime.

·         Removal of solid material

After pressing, remove the solid material. Unscrew and remove the cap to take the solid material out. If still sticking, using a spoon or scraper is recommended to take it out gently. Initially soft, the disc hardens in time. If the material is too soft or crumbly, it is suggested to press it again.

·         Storage of solid material for further use

Keep and store the solid disc or pellet in an airtight container, in a dark, cool place. Users can use it in making a variety of things, like edibles, concentrates, or topicals.

Helpful tip: For regular grinder users, it is essential to keep collecting the kief after every grinding session to ensure a stash of crystals before pressing them into easy-to-use pellets for longer storage.
